Coat Protein is Required for Infection of Cowpea Protoplasts with Alfalfa Mosaic Virus

Abstract
Infection of cowpea protoplasts with alfalfa mosaic virus RNA was achieved by sedimenting protoplasts from 0.5 m-mannitol and resuspending them in 0.7 m-mannitol containing 0.1 m-potassium phosphate, pH 6.0, and 100 µg/ml RNA. The osmotic shift-up employed during inoculation substantially enhanced the infection by virus RNA as well as by virus nucleoprotein.
