Abstract
Orbital symmetry analysis of various modes of concerted cycloaddition to the benzene ring, including dimerisation, indicates that the Woodward–Hoffmann rules apply, when appropriately viewed, to the thermal reactions, but not to the photochemical ones: the derived relationships accord well with existing experimental observations, and permit various predictions. Keywords
