Abstract
A modification of the Kleihauer, Betke technique for the identification of fetal erythrocytes in the maternal circulation is described. The addition of new methylene blue to the citric acid-phosphate laking buffer is vital in distinguishing fetal erythrocytes from adult reticulocytes. With regard to the presence or absence of fetal erythrocytes, the method is accurate in dilutions up to 1:100,000. This dilution would represent approximately 0.05 ml. or 1 drop of fetal blood in the entire maternal circulation. Keywords
