THE INFRA–RED SPECTROMETRIC ESTIMATION OF DIOSGENIN AND YAMOGENIN INDIVIDUALLY AND AS THEIR MIXTURES

Abstract
Diosgenin and yamogenin co–occur. The separation of their two epimers by preparative thin–layer chromatography has enabled their infra–red spectrometric estimation to be improved. The methods described were chosen for their accuracy and ability to determine the two epimers in all ratios. The range of error, calculated by Studentized Range Test (p = 0.99) for the concentration range 1.0–0.50 % w/v was found to be: for the Direct Method, 1.4–3.7 % for the total sapogenin content and 2.1–4.3 % for the predominant epimer; for the Ratio Method, 1.8–3.1 % for the total sapogenin content and 2.2–6.3 % for the individual epimers.
