Delayed postoperative anorectal hemorrhage

Abstract
Summary and Conclusions Delayed hemorrhage after anorectal surgery is a problem which concerns most of us, as responses to a questionnaire have shown; some proctologists reported no such complication in their experience. Etiology is discussed and technical features have been described which should overcome the difficulty. A balloon-ball rectal tube, a double balloon catheter and a univalve anal speculum have been presented and the method of using them has been described. Most cases of delayed postoperative bleeding can be handled without operative intervention. In our hands, no more blood was given by transfusion when nonoperative procedures were employed than when surgical intervention was required.
