Abstract
Variation observed in the growth and cytology of white clover cells is considered in relation to enzyme production in cultured tissue. Variation also occurred in the production of β-glucosidase by groups of cultured cells derived from the same plant and with identical cultural histories. This variability between cultures grown in a completely defined medium, provided an approach to the investigation of the factors affecting β-glucosidase production in cultured cells. Evidence was obtained from Michaelis constants that two distinct β-glucosidases were produced by cultured tissue.
