Abstract
The normal modes of a cholesteric liquid crystal in the presence of a magnetic field are determined from the hydrodynamical equations. The damping constants of the orientation modes are found to be sensitive functions of the field and exhibit band gaps when their wave vector is an integral multiple of a reciprocal-lattice vector. The results disagree with those of an earlier calculation by Fan, Kramer, and Stephen and reduce to the correct result in the zero-field limit. The light scattered by the modes is discussed in the Born approximation. Keywords
