Abstract
A growth trial with 30 individually fed weanling Shetland ponies was conducted during a 17-month period. Average daily gain and feed intake were significantly less when 4-month-old ponies were fed a pelleted diet that contained about 11 to 12% protein than when ponies were fed diets containing approximately 14 or 15.5% protein. Weight gains of the ponies fed at the two higher levels of protein were similar. After 8 months of age, none of the protein levels had a significant effect on average daily gain though feed intake was about 10% less by ponies fed at the lowest level of protein. All levels of protein intake provided 2.7 g or more of protein per kilogram of body weight, a value which is in excess of the 1.4 g/kg of body weight suggested by N.R.C. (1966). Copyright © 1972.
