ENDEMIC MALTA (MEDITERRANEAN) FEVER IN TEXAS

Abstract
At the time of our previous communication1on Malta (Mediterranean) fever in Texas, in which we reported the isolation of theMicrococcus melitensisfrom two patients ill of continued fever, it was known to us that other cases existed in the vicinity of Langtry, Texas, and it seemed highly probable that the disease had a much wider distribution. The recent work of the British Mediterranean Fever Commission2has conclusively shown that in the Island Malta Mediterranean fever is almost entirelly contracted trough drinking the milk of infected goats. All the cases observed by us had given a history of drinking goat's milk or of being actively engaged in the goatraising industry. In view of these facts, it was decided to make some study of continued fevers in the principal goat-raising section of the state, to ascertion if possible
