Abstract
Coupled oxidative phosphorylation was demonstrated with a large number of electron donors. This system in Azotobacter is extremely labile but can be stabilized by addition of ATP and Mg++. Esterification of inor- ganic phosphate is dependent upon the presence of O2, an oxidizable substrate and an acceptor system. The presence of particulate-bound oxidase in the form of [alpha]-ketoglutarate oxidase serves as a reliable indicator of the ability to couple phosphorylation to oxidation. The resistance of this system to uncoupling agents is similar to that observed with other Azotobacter preparations. The properties of the Azotobacter system are compared with similar systems from other bacteria. Keywords
