Effect of p-Chloromercuribenzene Sulfonate on Lens Cation Transport

Abstract
The effect of p-chloromercuribenzene sulfonate (PCMBS) on the lens cation transport system was studied. PCMBS was used since this reagent was reported to act primarily on the sulfhydryl (-SH) groups of the surface membranes. PCMBS decreased the accumulation of labeled RB+ in rat lens. Under certain conditions, PCMBS affected the Rb+ accumulation without affecting the levels of reduced glutathione or ATP, indicating that the reagent did not enter the lens fibers. Apparently -SH groups in the lens membranes do influence the cation transport mechanism.
