Abstract
Several specimens of the arborescent lycopod stem species Sigillaria latibasa Crookall are described from the Upper Carboniferous of Whitehaven, Cumberland. These show the species to have more variation in external stem morphology than has been previously illustrated. Comparisons are drawn with other plants which allow certain suggestions to be made about the growth of the plant. It appears that the apical growth-rate of the stem slowed for some reason, presumably before dichotomizing.
