Rate of Breakdown and Mechanism of Nitrite Inhibition of Steel Corrosion

Abstract
A study was made of the effect of temperature and concentration on the breakdown of sodium nitrite in solution in the presence of steel. The end breakdown product of nitrite was identified and the effect of the ratio of cathodic and anodic areas on the consumption of nitrite was determined. The rate of consumption of nitrite was found to be dependent on the rate of steel corrosion. A mechanism of reduction of nitrite by adsorption at anodic areas followed by reduction of cathodic hydrogen to give an adherent protective oxide is proposed.
