The natural history of alcoholism over four years after treatment.

Abstract
Patients (225) who received inpatient treatment for alcoholism at a private psychiatric hospital were followed for 4 consecutive yr. All patients were located each year and a determination via personal interview by a social worker and the use of at least 1 corroborative source was made concerning the individual''s drinking status and life-adjustment status over the past year. In the sample, 22% maintained complete abstinence and showed good adjustment consistently over the 4-yr period, whereas 24% showed some years of abstinence and other years of heavy drinking. Inconsistency in drinking status or life-adjustment status across the 4 yr challenged the contention that a 1st-yr follow-up is as accurate as a follow-up over several years. Generally 2 yr of consistent status were necessary before any relationship could be seen between the 1st- and 4th-yr statuses.
