Medical Complications Common to Spinal-Cord-Injured and Brain-Injured Patients

Abstract
This article is a selected review of medical complications that can afflict both spinal-cord-injured and brain-injured patients. Neuromedical concerns remain a prominent source of secondary problems and costs for persons with neurotrauma. Heterotopic ossification, autonomic dysfunction, deep venous thrombosis, dysphagia, and fluid and electrolyte disorders remain among the common problems encountered by the rehabilitation team caring for such persons.
