The Post-Transfer Fate of Relocated Mental Patients in New York

Abstract
Faced with the necessity to reduce staff because of large scale budget cuts in 1971, the New York State Dept. of Mental Hygiene relocated 2,174 patients to orher mental hospitals where there had been no reduction in staff. When the post-transfer fate of these patients was charted, there was no evidence that such forced relocation had significant impact on their mortality experience. Furthermore, about 17% of these patients were released from mental hospiral to nonpsychiatric community settings.
