Fetal hiccups.

Abstract
Fetal hiccoughs were noted in 33 out of 48 human fetuses studied. Frequency is tabulated against days before birth and time since change of maternal position. This frequency increases to a maximum in the 4th and 3d wks. before birth and then falls off markedly. Hiccoughs were most frequent within the 1st half-hour after a major change of maternal position. Frequency of the hiccoughing is compared with frequency of post-natal hiccoughs (1st 8 days of life) and the etiology of pre-natal hiccoughs briefly discussed. No significant differences were found at birth between the hiccoughing and the non-hiccoughing fetuses.
