Antibodies to “Alcalase” after Industrial Exposure

Abstract
Nineteen of 22 workers in a detergent factory, exposed to an enzyme additive ("Alcalase") derived from Bacillus subtilis cultures, had circulating antibodies to a component of this material; the antibodies reacted also with a component of a purified subtilisin ("Carlsberg") preparation. None of 40 unexposed subjects had this antibody. In two guinea pigs immunized with Alcalase, antibodies developed that reacted with the same component of Alcalase that reacted with the human antiserums and with similar components of two purified subtilisin preparations ("Carlsberg" and "Novo").
