Abstract
The effects of the long range dipole-dipole interactions on the current-current correlation functions of anisotropic crystals are evaluated for a simple model of an anisotropic crystal. We show that the resulting angular dependence of exciton energies in anisotropic crystals agrees with that given by Fox and Yatsiv and is necessary for the validity of the constitutive relations commonly used with the Maxwell equations. As a consequence, excitons are implicit in the Fresnel equations of classical optics. Keywords
