Abstract
A series of measurements of the emission rate in the H α line in the spectrum of the night sky has been made with a photoelectric spectrometer at the Observatoire de Haute Provence. The observations were made at the zenith and the North Celestial Pole and care was taken to make proper allowance for the integrated starlight, the zodiacal light and the airglow continuum, for the effect of atmospheric absorption and scattering, for instrumental polarization and for contamination by galactic sources of H α .
