Abstract
A review of the literature on the use of seawater for flue gas desulphurisation shows that this method is simpler, more efficient and more economical than others currently in operation. Sulphur dioxide may be scrubbed from the flue gas with an efficiency >99% and this is due to the buffer capacity of seawater and the chloride ion catalysed oxidation of SO2 by O2.
