Abstract
Netilmicin 200 mg bid was highly effective therapy for most life-threatening infections in hospital patients with susceptible organisms, including septicaemia, pyelonephritis, deep wound sepsis and Kiebsiella-Enterobacter pneumonia, although pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa seemed to respond less well. It has so far been remarkably free of oto- and nephro-toxic effects, considering the relatively high serum concentrations that have been achieved. But serum assay is necessary, even in patients without overt renal dysfunction, to monitor dosage (as for other aminoglycosides) to achieve therapeutic efficacy and to avoid accumulation and possible toxicity. Keywords
