Abstract
Subungual exostoses were first described by Dupuytren1 in 1817. Although this curious disease is rather common ( Williams2 reported thirty-five cases, Kurtz,3 forty-two and Davidson4 five), there is no mention of the subject in most textbooks, and the medical literature contains only a few scattered references. The underlying condition is seldom suspected, unless one is familiar with the condition or has had roentgenograms made, for the lesion is a fibrous nodule and is therefore associated with dermatologic conditions. Because of the appearance of the exostoses as firm, dense tumors, together with their tendency to recur after excision, many cases have undoubtedly been diagnosed as malignant, and needless amputations have probably been performed. For these reasons this rather painful and disabling condition is worthy of review in the dermatologic literature.
