Abstract
Discusses the mating behavior of the Palmate Newt. There are 2 striking features in the courtship display in the Palmate Newt: (1) the display always takes place in front of the female, and (2) the male makes sure that the female sees his tail vibrating. The belief that the vibration of the tail set up a current in the water, which carried the spermatozoa towards the female has been proved to be untrue. There is insufficient evidence to prove that the female is recognized by sight alone. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
