Abstract
Equations, based upon the hypothesis that the nephron comprises 2 regions of distinct but different permeability to urea, are derived which describe urea clearance in terms of glomerular filtration rate, regional permeabilities and urine flow. Calculation of permeability constants and behavior of the equations under various conditions are illustrated. The equations predict the changes in urea/inulin clearance ratios attendant upon water and osmotic diuresis and upon filtration rate changes. Agreement with available experimental data is good. Keywords
