Abstract
Consideration of the coupling between discrete and continuous states of the nuclear system in a straightforward manner entails a unified description of particle decay and fission. The particle width consists of two terms, one of which corresponds to the standard term of R-matrix theory and the other one originates from the feedback of the continuum to the nucleus. The standard term dominates in particle decay while the feedback term, containing the coherent effects, dominates in fission. The corrections from the feedback term to the particle decay widths and from the standard term to the fission process are discussed. Keywords
