Affect and Proto-Affect in Effective Functioning

Abstract
This chapter proposes a functional model of effective functioning that depends on the interplay of four relatively independent domains. These are the domains of affect, motivation, cognition, and behaviour. These domains of functioning need to be considered at the reactive, the routine, and the reflective levels of information processing. This chapter claims that the proposed model can be used in the design of emotions in computational artefacts of arbitrary complexity that must perform unanticipated tasks in unpredictable environments.
