Abstract
Culture filtrates of virulent strains of Penicillium italicum, P. digitatum, and P. expansum had pectolytic and usually cellulolytic activity, depending on the carbon source in the defined medium, the presence of a second carbon source, cultural conditions, or the duration of incubation. Pectin-methylesterase activity was not detected. Avirulent mutants of P. italicum and P. digitatum grown with pectin as the carbon source gave filtrates with pectolytic activity. Orange tissue rotted by P. italicum or P. digitatum had both pectolytic and cellulolytic activity; necrotic tissue produced by avirulent mutants of these species had cellulolytic but not pectolytic activity. The pectolytic and cellulolytic enzymes of P. italicum and P. digitatum could be distinguished by their activity curves at different pH values and rates of thermal inactivation.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
