Abstract
The capillary changes evidenced by staining for alkaline phosphatase activity in palmar skin was described in lupus erythematosus and scleroderma. In systemic lupus erythematosus (S.L.E.) there are marked characteristic and diagnostic changes involving the architecture and pattern of the subepidermal capillaries. Similar changes are found only in clinically involved skin of patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) Changes in the capillary pattern in uninvolved areas in DLE may denote evolution of DLE into SLE. In systemic scleroderma there is a marked diminution of capillaries in the dermal papillae. Keywords
