Magnetic Anisotropy of a Cobalt Thin Film Prepared by Oblique Incidence

Abstract
The effect of oblique incidence on the magnetic anisotropy of a Co thin film was studied for films prepared at incidence angles of up to 70 degrees. It was found that the saturation magnetization per unit volume decreased with an increase of the incidence angle (about 60% of that of the bulk when the incidence angle was 65 degrees). From magnetic torque measurements, it was found that not only the shape anisotropy due to the columnar structure of the film, but also the crystalline anisotropy of the Co metal played an important role in the magnetic characteristics of the film.
