Movement of Salts in Ponded Anisotropic Soils

Abstract
The method of determining the displacement front of an interface between saline and fresh water to subsurface drains under ponded conditions, proposed by Luthin, et al., is extended to anisotropic soils. A computer program written in FORTRAN IV allows determination of the position of the displacement front at different times when point values of the stream and potential function are available. The results presented can be applied to any other system with the same value of the ratio kh/kv, which would be geometrically similar to the system considered herein. The results indicate that the distribution of flow at the surface improves with the value of the parameter kh/kv. This means that leaching in the region halfway between drains will be better for an anisotropic soil than for an isotropic one.
