SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE DEPENDENCE OF STRAIN ON STRESS FOR ICE

Abstract
Observations were made on the longitudinal and transverse strain of rectangular ice samples stressed at the rate of 2 kg/cm2/sec to a maximum stress of 10 kg/cm2. The duration of the stress was kept less than 10 seconds. Under these conditions the ice behaved elastically. The observations indicated that two deformation processes contributed to the measured strain. It is concluded that the two sources of strain are deformation of the grains and slip at the grain boundaries.Keywords
