Abstract
ICI Plant Protection Division (formerly Plant Protection Limited) has been developing the technique of direct drilling, based on the use of paraquat (‘Gramoxone’) as a contact herbicide, since 1961. Drills had to be designed suitable for a range of crops and soil conditions for sale to farmers and for inclusion in hire schemes, using the services of agricultural machinery contractors. The practice is expanding rapidly, even in the wet autumn of 1974.Keywords
