Abstract
In this article, Dr. Simopoulos proposes that, in developing food guides for various populations, attention be directed to the dietary patterns that prevailed early in the evolutionary history of that population and its current health status. She emphasizes that the dietary aspects of the environment have changed much more over the centuries than has the human genome. Because of the diverse genetic patterns in various cultures, she argues that universal dietary recommendations are not applicable and that, to be effective, food guides must incorporate the unique dietary components in which the group has evolved and thrived. Keywords
