Abstract
The water balance of the Sudd is represented by a hydrological model which uses measured inflows and outflows and estimates of rainfall and evaporation to reproduce volumes and areas of flooding over the historical period 1905–1980. Predicted outflows based on inflows are then substituted for measured outflows so that the proposed diversions through the Jonglei Canal can be incorporated in the model in order to predict the effects of the canal on areas of flooding. Keywords
