Abstract
The films of 117 patients with mammary carcinoma detected at population screening were reviewed. Sixteen percent (19) of the women proved to have noninvasive and 43% (50) small invasive carcinomas (diameter .ltoreq. 10 mm). Calcifications were the dominating abnormality in 95% of the noninvasive carcinomas, while a tumor mass was the most frequent abnormality in small invasive carcinomas. The appearance of small tumors may vary considerably from one projection to another and also on films in one and the same projection. Approximately 20% of small invasive carcinomas were not visible or equivocal in one of the 2 projections used at screening. The corresponding figures for larger invasive carcinomas (diameter > 10 mm) was .apprx. 7%. Films in 2 projections, preferably the craniocaudal and oblique. should be obtained at screening.
