Practical Applications of the Australia Antigen Test

Abstract
The Australia antigen test has become routine in many blood banks, and a sharp decline in posttransfusion hepatitis among recipients of “negative” blood has been recorded. The test also has many other uses. Frequency of the antigen among patients with Down's syndrome, leukemia or leprosy has important implications in their care. It also would seem advisable to use the test to monitor high-risk medical personnel such as those in renal dialysis units, primate handlers, and workers in some laboratories. Food handlers, dentists, and some presurgical patients might also be tested.
