The 195Pt nuclear magnetic resonance shifts and electronic absorption spectra of some platinum(II) complexes

Abstract
Simplification of Ramsey's equation applied to the 195Pt chemical shift in square-planar platinum(II) complexes leads to an equation in which the paramagnetic shift is proportional to a linear combination of the wavelengths of two transitions in the absorption spectra of the complexes. The factor of proportionality depends on the covalency of the metal-ligand bonds and the radial functions of the platinum 5d orbitals. The results reported indicate that the shifts are dominated by changes in the wavelengths if the halide ligand is unchanged, but by the proportionality factor for the changes in the halide ligands.
