Abstract
Johnston R. J. (1971) Regional development in New Zeland: The problems of a small yet prosperous ex-colony, Reg. Studies 5, 321–331. The initial development of New Zealand's regional pattern is outlined, highlighting the fragmented nature of the country and the system of regionally primate centres which emerged. Industrial growth within that regional framework is then outlined, emphasizing the scattered distribution of primary-processing export industries but the centralization of all others. Recent changes in the regional employment structure are assessed using employment data for 51 categories over 23 districts, via principal components and shift and share analysis. Results indicate a polarization of development around Auckland, and the final discussion is concerned with the future of this trend and its possible correction.
