Factor Invariance of Nonwork Activities

Abstract
Five nonwork activity dimensions are obtained by factor analyzing 12 popular activities among males and females. Separate factor analyzes are performed for the years 1975 and 1976 and for males vs. females. This allows for the assessment of temporal and intergroup invariance of the derived dimensions. The data is also split in half to examine the internal consistency or reliability of the activity dimensions. Use of a factor congruence test reveals that only two nonwork activity dimensions are internally reliable and also invariant over time and across groups. This conclusion contradicts the appearance of generally reliable and invariant dimensions often obtained through subjective analyses.
