The use of computed tomography in recurrent rectal tumors.

Abstract
Patients (36) treated surgically for carcinoma of the rectum were examined by computed tomography (CT) to determine its value in investigating local pelvic recurrence. Thirteen patients with suspected recurrence but no clinical or radiological evidence of disease and 19 patients with known recurrence were scanned. CT is apparently effective for diagnosing local recurrence from carcinoma of the rectum and accurately delineates the extent of tumor spread, as well as organ and muscle involvement. The value of CT for screening patients at high risk of developing pelvic recurrence is discussed.
