Abstract
Pictures constitute a valuable means of rendering vivid the panorama of history. History, of course, is more than a narrative. It must weave together many different strands, must deal with culture and ideas as well as concrete events. And well-chosen pictures form a splendid way of conveying the richness of the past. In the present volume the illustrations are magnificent. With great expertise they reproduce artifacts, drawings, paintings, cartoons, photographs, all bearing on the history of medicine from prehistoric times, through ancient and medieval medicine, up to 1965. Several are in color. The choice of subject matter and the quality of reproduction deserve the highest praise. The text, unfortunately, is a disappointment. The author is a journalist interested in medicine, who has relied on secondary and especially tertiary source material. It is regrettable that his sources are not well chosen, and his frequent dogmatism is quite inexcusable. In 186 pagesKeywords
