Abstract
Sesame oil, when administered intraperit. in daily doses of 0.25-1.0 cc. for a period of several wks., produced toxic effects in normal [male] rats. Extraction of sesame oil with ethyl alc. yielded alc.-soluble fractions, and an alc.-insoluble fraction designated as depleted sesame oil. The alc.-soluble fractions were toxic to immature adrenalectomized [male] rats, as detd. by shortened mean survival periods. The depleted sesame oil prolonged the survival time of immature adrenalectomized [male][male]. Oxidized depleted sesame oil, all fractions resulting from hydrolysis of sesame oil, as well as synthetic tricaproin, synthetic a-tocopherol, wheat germ oil, and pure linoleic acid shortened the avg. survival period of immature adrenalectomized rats. Survival time of lactating rats adrenalectomized before parturition was prolonged by depleted sesame oil, and lactation was improved markedly, enabling 47% of the young to survive successfully. All suckling young were stunted but gained wt. rapidly after weaning, and when mature produced fertile matings. Since similar results were obtained with wheat germ oil and synthetic tricaproin, but not with synthetic [alpha]-tocopherol dissolved in depleted sesame oil, the beneficial effects were attributed to the neutral fats. The injected neutral fats apparently benefit the suckling young of adrenalectomized lactating rats through prevention of mammary involution. This in turn by relationships with the ant. pituitary and ovary possibly influences corpora lutea of lactation to secrete enough progesterone to maintain temporarily the life of the adult [female] rat. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
