Abstract
A spectrophotometric method is described for separating the contributions to the zodiacal light of scattering by dust, and by free electrons. A suitably designed photoelectric spectrophotometer has been used to compare the intensities of the two Fraunhofer lines H β and Fe I 4384 in the spectra of the zodiacal light (with correction for night sky background) and of sunlight. The results are interpreted as indicating an electron density of 16 ± 20 cm −3 in interplanetary space at 1 A.U. from the Sun.Keywords
