Photoprotection of Patients Sensitive to Short and/or Long Ultraviolet Light with Dihydroxyacetone/Naphthoquinone

Abstract
The topical sunscreen, dihydroxyacetone/lawsone (DHA/lawsone), was tested on 18 patients with photosensitivity disorders. Separate sequential application of the components increased sunlight tolerance in these patients twelvefold, thus providing four times greater protection against sunlight than did the previous technique employing mixtures of the components. This sunscreen, which is chemically bound to the stratum corneum, provides both long and short ultraviolet photoprotection.
