Abstract
Three classical adiabatic ensembles of recent origin and the well-known microcanonical ensemble are combined in a unified treatment of adiabatic shell ensembles. A few ensemble-average properties are treated, and the ideal-gas law is derived in each case for comparative illustrations. Two of the ensembles represent open systems which are of current interest in molecular-dynamics studies. Keywords
