Observations on the Ability of the Snail Australorbis nigricans to Survive out of Water in the Laboratory

Abstract
Evidence brought by the authors indicate that 2 strains of Australorbis nigricans (Spix) from southern Brazil can live only for short periods out of water. The snails studied were collected in Acari near the city of Rio de Janeiro and St. Goncalo a locality near Niteroi, State of Rio de Janeiro. A resistant strain of Australorbis glabratus, known to survive out of water for longer periods, was used as a control. On the other hand, the resistant strain of A.glabratus kept its tolerance to live out of water in the F4 generation when compared with poorly resistant strains of A. nigricans.Keywords
