Abstract
A rapid plate method for determining carbohydrate utilization by members of the genus Brucella is described. The method employs resazurin as an oxidation-reduction indicator, results being available within 20 to 24 hours. All species tested readily utilize glucose, galactose, fructose, and xylose. More extensive studies have shown that maltose and trehalose are utilized by Brucella suis but not by B. abortus or B. melitensis. In the present work, the latter carbohydrates served to separate B. suis from the other species. Differential sugars for B. abortus and B. melitensis were not found among the carbohydrates tested. Keywords
