Abstract
ALTHOUGH ADVANCES have been made in the treatment of bipolar disorder, existing therapies are not always effective or are accompanied by adverse effects that lead to noncompliance. The efficacy of lithium and valproate has been established by well-designed clinical trials1-3; however, side effects and treatment failures are present with both drugs.1,4 Typical antipsychotics are also used for the treatment of acute mania, although their side effect profiles are far from ideal.5Keywords
