Abstract
We propose and demonstrate quantitatively that a two-component electron distribution with the energy of the suprathermal tail approximately matched to the excitation energy of the upper lasing state results in greatly enhanced x-ray gain in neon-like ions. Such a configuration may be attainable in laser-driven plasmas. Keywords
